Sunday came and went, wasted away in front of the television with only a quick conversation with the man who dropped off Robert’s Chinese takeaway, later in the day. Monday was a typical day of working in the office, dealing with customers calling in with various complaints. No phone call from Tom though. Tuesday was also quiet and - later in the day - Robert found himself wondering whether this was going to happen at all. Had his friend taken his money and run off? If he had, could Robert tell anyone? Not exactly something he could go to the police for. He laughed at the prospect of having to explain the problem, playing through the scenario in his over-active mind.

‘Right. So. You… You are saying you paid him £250 so you could…’ The police would pause, unsure of how to finish the sentence. Perhaps even wondering if he wanted to finish it. Were people really this sick? Tom might get a ticking off from the police, true, but chances are Robert would be locked up in a mental home instead before he even had the opportunity to finish his sentence.

It was Wednesday afternoon when Robert picked up the phone and called through to Tom. The office staffroom was quiet with only Robert in it now. Everyone else had gone back to work from their lunch-break whereas he still had fifteen minutes left having purposefully started his

lunch break a little later than his colleagues. He was sitting at a table with his back to the wall. With the phone pressed to his ear, he kept an eye on the door just in case someone came in - not that they had an obvious reason to. Nothing had been left on the tables that they could have claimed to have accidentally forgotten and the tea and coffee machine was out in the main foyer after management decided the small staffroom would get too crammed if it were kept where Robert was sitting now. Robert didn’t believe their reasoning. He believed they just wanted to keep an easier eye on those who abused having access to free hot drinks. Some staff did, after all, take the piss with repeated trips to the machine when, truthfully, they should have been working. One unnamed staff member had been known to drink six coffees in the morning and more in the afternoon when the machine was hidden away in the staffroom. What frustrated the management more was not the fact he was wasting so much time avoiding work but the fact he never drank the whole drink! He’d make it, have half and then bin it later when he went to get a fresh cup. Now the machine was in the foyer, the breaks he took had been more than halved.

‘Hello?’ Tom finally answered the phone.

‘It’s me.’

‘Caller ID. Wonderful thing. What’s up, Rob?’

‘I was just wondering if…’

‘Nothing.’ Tom knew what he was phoning for. He was actually surprised he hadn’t heard from him sooner. ‘Some young kid, a boy before you ask, was brought in.
